Gnome sound (PPC)

Hi,

I have something of a sound problem. Gnome has no sound for events,
despite enabling it. However, applications like Rhythmbox, XMMS,
Realplayer etc work fine.

How do I make the sound work for Gnome?

Another issue is that sound by default goes to the built-in speakers,
instead of the line out. By muting the speakers this gets resolved, but
the Gnome volume applet doesn't seem to remember that next time I log in.

All this on an iMac Rev.A (G3).
