Slow networking?

In a note to me on another topic, there was this graf in passing from
another Ubuntu user.  I don't network so it's not an issue for me, but
I'm curious if anybody else has encountered this behavior:

"In general, I am quite pleased with Ubuntu, but for one thing: slow 
networking.  (Much slower even than Windows!)  This is something I've 
never encountered while running any other Linux distro.  DNS lookups 
while surfing and checking email drag, and browsing disk shares on my 
Samba server is agonizing!  My NIC is a run-of-the-mill 3Com 3C905, well
supported under Linux, so I'm a little baffled.  There may be some 
services running which are causing the problem, but I have not had time 
to dig around 'under the hood.'"
