powering down issue?

Greetings, another "newbie" checking in.
	I've only had Ubuntu running for a few days and am having a wonderful
time thus far... until I actually shut the computer down.  It gets to
the last line concerning powering down and hangs.  I'm waiting for a
reasonable time and just holding the power button down till it dies.
I'm not seeing any obvious weirdness in the scrolling messages as
everything is closing.... I'm running an old PIII 550 on an Asus 440BX
motherboard with 128mb RAM and a WD 8 gig Hard drive- yep I know, hardly
cutting edge but it still should auto power down, right?  Thanks for any
help.
