You can do a custom (minimal) installation, but you probably wouldn't be
happy with it for a desktop. It provides a small base system, and you would
need to add all of the software that you want manually.
Apart from the disk space, that machine should run Ubuntu just fine, so if
you have the opportunity to add disk space, that would be my recommendation.
