XSane Problems

I've got a Canon LiDE 20 scanner hooked up to my Athlon XP 1800 Ubuntu 
box.

Whenever I launch XSane as myself I get a no scanners found error. When 
I launch the program from the commandline using sudo, XSane warns me 
about running the program under root but it does run and the program 
works fine. It finds the scanner and the scanner does its job.

Is there something I'm missing? I don't really want to run it as root.
