GRUB stops at a command line during stage 2 install reboot

Put a smile on my face here. When one of the developers tells me it
isn't really going to be easy to fix, I KNOW I'm in trouble, lol!

Prior to seeing your message and the above instructions, I ended up
deleting the Ubuntu partitions and trying FIXMBR and FIXBOOT from the XP
recovery disk. That didn't work...was now faced with a reboot stopping
where XP said the "NTLDR is missing." Figured that meant GRUB was gone
but I didn't have the Windows boot loader either. I used Drive Image to
copy my XP boot backup image back to this partition and rebooted. All is
(was) well...now I was able for the system to boot straight into XP
without problems.

I then went to install Ubuntu again and ran into a similar problem, but
I'll put all that in a separate post. I'm saving your post in case I
need it again! :)
