Splash screen stays on

Hi,

I've noticed this happening with Gnome for quite a while on various
distos (Debian Sid, Gentoo, and Ubuntu).

For me it seems to occur if my gnome session is terminated improperly
(ie. not logging out properly) for whatever reason. After I log in
again and then log out properly the splash problem seems to go away.

I've got no idea what's going on the code-level but I thought you
might be able to relate to my experience.
