Upgraded via daily CD, #1943 bug remains

I did the following in the console:

sudo apt-cdrom add with the 10-5 daily CD
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade -f

The -f was neccessary because when I installed Samba off of the
original prerelease CD, it somehow came off broken.

A lot of things were transferred off of the CD and unpacked; I then
went back to GDM via ctl-alt-F7 and logged in. Still nothing but a
blank background and a cursor, even though (if I've read things right)
the patched control-center 2.8.0-0ubuntu4 was supposed to have been
installed by the upgrade.

Did I do something wrong?
