Splash screen stays on

Hi,

I have Unbuntu installed. Everything seems to be fine, but when I booted 
today I found that the splash screen didn't disappear as it normally does.

The icons appear in the splash as normal, but it freezes on the last 
one, no matter what it is.

If I click on the splash screen it closes. There are no obvious errors 
in /var/log/messages.

FYI, I have installed all available updates from the "universe" sources, 
but only for things that I had already installed.

Any ideas why this is happening?
