sound question

Hi

Apologies if the following is a really stupid question but coming from
using KDE how does sound work in Ubuntu. Does the esd daemon handle the
sound and under my 'Open Volume Control' I see two tabs

1. Realtek ALC655 (oss mixer)
2. Via 823x rev60 (alsa mixer)

I can understand the Via one as this is the onboard sound card however
the Realtek jobby. What sets up these two mixers?
