Newbie question - no X (or Gnome)

Sorry if this is awfully straightforward - Ive successfully setup Ubuntu
on my old Toshiba laptop and a couple other PC's.
On my home system I'm running a basic AMD 1.3 Gig processor with a Ge
Force Ti4200 Video card. DHCP is picked up automatically over my broadband
Ubuntu installs ok until I get to X. Whcih says there's a problem. Module
Loader not installed (from memory). Which leaves me with no GUI for Gnome.
Is this something stupid I'm doing or is it an nVidia based problem?
Regards to all
