If you run 'sudo modconf' you should be able to select SG from the SCSI
section
of the modules - this will ensure that this module is loaded each time
on bootup.

I hope this works, as I also have a USB CD-RW which was detected by
Knoppix, but
I have had the same problem as you.  Hopefully this will work when I get
home
tonight!
