Many CD-ROM drives do not handle DMA correctly. This caused users to be
unable to install Ubuntu from their CD-ROM drive. As a tradeoff, we
disabled DMA on CD-ROMs by default, so that they can be enabled in
situations such as yours, where this is known to work correctly.

Perhaps at some point in the future we can make a more intelligent decision
about whether to enable DMA on a CD-ROM drive, but in order to fix the worst
of the problems, we chose this path for the Warty release.
