mouse stops clicking

I just installed ubuntu 4.10, but I have a problem where the computer 
stops registering clicks at some point not long after I log in. It'll be 
fine until I click some button in the first or second app I open, and 
it'll stop clicking after that. The mouse pointer will also stop 
changing shape according to context. It'll be frozen in the last shape 
it held before breaking. I can get it back by restarting the X server, 
but it breaks again so soon that this isn't really a workaround.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated;
