Warty and the Pentax

I have a Pentax Option 33LF
I've not managed to get Sarge to talk nicely to it. SuSe 9 does, with a
bit of a kick.
I was very interested to plug a camera full of pics into Warty.
The version I'm running is 2004-09-29_21:53 on IA32.
I plugged in the camera, turned it on and waited.
and waited.
and opened up a terminal to see what was going on. Nothing was mounted.
then a dialogue popped up, "import photos." I was impressed, even though
it seemed a little slow.
I started to fill in the form, then was informed "no camera detected."
This is about what I expected with this camera.
The first problem was lack of speed. There was no indication that
something was happening. I'm not one for gratuous splashes, but some
feedback is needed.
Second, the dialogue window does not give any information about what
application is running. It would be extremely difficult for "an average
user" to identify what was not working.
I was able to find out by using the ps command that the program was gthumb.
There is a man page (to my surprise!), but it does not document this use
of gthumb.
I started gthumb, pointing it at /media/sda1, and from there I was able
view the pics.
I actually imported the photos:
cp -pr /media/sda1 Desktop/Photos
Not the Right Way for "the average user," but it's what I expect to have
to do (on Sarge) in the short time if I lose my Powerbook.
