Actually, I disagree :)
I see 2 main groups of Ubuntu users.
1) Novice desktop users

2) Server users
The careful handling of initscripts, lsb-functions, time based releases, etc etc
Make Ubuntu a good alternative to redhat. IMHO Ubuntu is a better server
release then redhat, because it allows more flexability 
such as perl 5.6 to be used with the latest software, finer grain packages,
better package builders, human readable package database, etc etc

So.... not all of us want to see the gui
