X and virtual consoles not working together

Hello,
	I just encountered this recently and I am not even sure how to go about
discovering what causes the problem. It was working when I initially
installed ubuntu and even after subsequent updates, why it is not
working now I have no clue.  Well it started last night, I left my X
session open and the system was locked up with the screensaver on. I
then ssh'd in from another system and restarted the gdm, everything was
fine again. I then tried to switch to a virtual console and I got a
blank screen and the system was locked so once again I ssh'd in and
restarted the gdm and everything is back to normal. Except of course I
cannot switch to a virtual terminal and I don't know what will happen if
I leave it alone again for a while.
