iMac- volume slider doesn't effect sound volume

In the Volume Control, under the oss mixer, the speaker slider is the
only one that has an effect on my volume. On the alsa mixer side, the pc
speaker effects volume. Other than that none of the other sliders effect
volume, and the Volume applet in my menu bar doesn't effect volume. So
if I want to alter the volume I have to open the Volume Control panel an
use either of those two sliders. Both seem to have the same effect.
