No Net access

 am a newbie, so it you have a fix for me, please be verbose.

Mobo - Asus P4C800 with integrated 3Com 3C940 controller

The Sarge installer sets up internet access with no problems (ADSL).
The Ubuntu installer seems to set up DHCP but then says I have no internet access when configuring.
When I log into Gnome I cannot access the internet and cannot figure out how to set it up.  The 3C940 controller is listed in devices.

When I run dhclient is runs through a bunch of discoveries on port 67 then ends with:
    No DHCPOFFERS received
    No working leases in persistent database - sleeping

Do I need to manually open a port somehow?

Any help is appreciated.
