Hi Bruce,
are you working on a laptop or do you have a LCD panel?
In both cases you need to know that both of them have a peculiar design.
They only support ONE resolution. All the others (smaller) are simply
magnified to fit the screen, but yes, you can still change them either
as Matt suggested or using sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86
