Not without a fiewwall. It's needed to control NAT, incoming connexions 
for those who want incoming mail, to run a web server, enable remote 
admin via SSH and/or VNC, presumably to participate in bittorrent (I've 
not looked into that one), napster-style filesharing (is that the same 
thing?)....
