Openoffice - writing aids not comming up

Hi, 

I installed the ubuntu distribution on an AMD64 and openoffice (1.1.2)
works just fine except that when I install a dictionary it does not come
up under writing aids and remains empty. No options exists to edit. 

I have tried the following: 
- Installed a dictionary pack and select the English (South Africa) dict
and made sure that my language settings are also set to English (South
Africa) 
- my locale is set to LANG=en_ZA 
- in ~/.openoffice/1.1.2/user/workbook/ I have en_GB.aff, en_GB.dic 
- my dictionary.lst file contains "DICT en ZA en_GB" 

I am at a loss, any help would be great
