Printing notification appears only temporarily

While using my desktop, the printing icon appears in my notification
tray when somebody in the office prints to our printer. I can double
click this icon to have the list of printing jobs show. The jobs show.
After about 3 seconds, all the jobs in the list disappear and do not
return. The jobs are still printing according to the remote Cups system.
It seems like it's simply the display... they just don't hang around.
