Backup program?

gar (I think..) is a tar-like program with the slight difference that 
individual files can be picked out from the gar-image with ease.  Not 
quite what you're after, but worth a look?

Disclaimer:  haven't used it myself (but curious to hear your comments 
if you do.. ;)
