DMA issues with install and live CD

I am having the same problem as well. I found that passing a generic
"nodma" as opposed to "ide=nodma" makes the live CD work, however I'm
still at a quandary as to how to make the install work. I currently
have KNOPPIX 3.6 installed on the machine (straight from the live CD to
the HD) and would very much like to replace it with Ubuntu. Please
someone help a poor old n00b.
