Default Colour Depth in XF86Config-4

One question I've been meaning to ask that I got reminded of when I
did another laptop install of Warty today is why Ubuntu uses 24 bit as
the default colour depth when a large number of laptop LCD displays
only support 16 bit? This results in the image being too small to fill
the LCD screen and the only way to fix it is to manually edit the
XF86Config-4 as the configuration script allows you to select
resolutions but not colour depth.
