glX problem : no Alpha channel ??

A ray of hope... it seems that there is a library called 'mesa' that's
involved. 

Found this link http://www.mesa3d.org/envvars.html  that says there is a
mesa environment variable,  MESA_GLX_FORCE_ALPHA ,that you can use to
force RGB windows to use an alpha channel.
It's all chinese to me, but it sounds like something I could try ?

But.... in what file does this variable go ? In some mesa related
configuration file, or with all the other environment variable of
Ubuntu, which I have no clue where it is either BTW !?
