OK, 686 is working. Now what?

Hi all,

I took the advice on the forum and the FAQs and upgraded from linux-386
to linux-686. A remarkably painless procedure: the synaptic output
showed some fooling around with grub and when I rebooted (fingers
crossed), the 686 kernel was active..

Bootup seemed (subjectively) slightly slower, but according to gkrellm
my full 1GB of memory is now available. Yes!! That's 150Mb that was paid
for and is now in use.

So, that leaves a simple question. Is it safe to remove the linux-386-*
packages, and if I do, will the next upgrade in 5 months' time throw a
fit? I realise they're not doing any harm, but while they are there,
they are going to affect apt-get dist-upgrades, and down here in the 3rd
world, most of us are still on metered, pay-per-second dial-up accounts.
No sense in leaving those big packets there to suck up phone time on
unnecessary upgrades.

Thanks in advance,
Michel
