restarting X

Normally you have to wait a few seconds for the restart to occur, and
during this time you will see the login prompt.  I'm not sure, but I
would assume it's a feature of the GDM daemon.

If that doesn't happen you could login and run 'startx' at the prompt.
 But when you logout from your Gnome session I think you'd go back to
a command prompt and not the GDM login screen.
