Hot/Warm swap for laptop devices

I have a couple of IBM Thinkpads, a T20 and a T23. Both work well with
Ubuntu. However, I'm wondering about support for swapping items in
their swap bays - is it possible to (for instance), eject the DVD drive
and replace it with the floppy without shutting down? If so, how does
it need to be set up?
