My swap is gone?!

I run Matthew Garret's 2.6.9 kernel (so suspend to RAM works), and I
just noticed that my swap is gone.

"free" shows zero swapspace, and trying to run "sudo swapon -a" just
gives me an error that hda5 is not a valid argument.

/proc/swaps exists but is empty.

I know I had a swap partition - I made one on install. It is not
critical in itself (I have enough memory), but I worry that this could
be an indication of deeper, coming troble.
