If you're specifically having those problems in Firefox, it might be
the oft-discussed IPv6 issue. Disabling IPv6 just in Firefox has
solved slow DNS issues for other people (including myself). Here's the
basic idea, since I didn't see a howto for it:
Enter "about:config" into the address bar and hit enter.
In the filter line at the top, enter "ipv6" and it should show you
just one entry - network.dns.disableIPv6.
Double-click on the name to change the value from false to true. I
don't *think* you need to restart Firefox after this, but if you don't
see any change you could try it.
If you're having the problem outside Firefox, I'll let someone more
knowledgable help you. :-)
(either way I'll add this info to the Firefox HowTo!)
