No it seems that you could just upgrade your alsa drivers. Simply get the
ubuntu-kernel-sources:

| sudo apt-get install linux-source-2.6.8.1

make an oldconfig with

| sudo cp /boot/config-2.6.8.1-3-XXX /usr/src/linux-source-2.6.8.1/
| cd /usr/src/linux-source-2.6.8.1/
| sudo make oldconfig; sudo make deb

and now you can follow the alsa build descriptions from here:

| http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php?page=AlsaBuild2.6
| http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/*checkout*/alsa/alsa-driver/INSTALL?rev=1.175

This should overwrite your current modules with the new one. Just reboot
and everything is full of strange colors ... ;-)
