ifconfig eth0 down -- ifconfig eth0 up

When I go to bed at night, I sometimes like to leave my computer running
but if I'm not needing the internet I feel more comfortable if I "sudo
ifconfig eth0 down" so no-one can even try to hack my computer. But when
I come back in the morning and do a "sudo ifconfig eth0 up" I get my ip
address back but I can't get on the internet with webbrowser or ping,
etc....

anyone know why or how to get it working again, without a reboot. I'm
mean I'm not running windows anymore :)
