After a while of googling I found a nice thread[1] depending on your
problem which points me to the fakt that your soundcard is supported
since alsa version 1.0.5a. However the ubuntu kernel uses this version:

| $ cat /proc/asound/version

| Compiled on Oct 12 2004 for kernel 2.6.8.1-3-386.

It seems you have to upgrade your alsa driver (snd-ice1724) ...
