Power Down problem

When i shut down Ubuntu it fails to power down(it kills all processes 
then gives the power down command. system makes the ussual clack sound 
put is still on). I've never had this problem before  neither with 
Windows nor with any other Linux Distro. Any ideas? thanks in advance
