compiling lt_modem.ko failed

I am running ubuntu on a comp that has a lucent win modem.  I posted a
thread asking for help on how to get dial up working

I followed a mailing list's members advise to download
ltmodem-8.31a7.tar from this site
http://www.physcip.uni-stuttgart.de/heby/ltmodem/ .  I uncompress the
files into my home dir and did build_deb.  But failed with an error
msg like this: error compiling lt_modem.ko.  Can anyone please give me
some advice?  thank you very much.
