I have just sent numerous mails to him asking him to please turn this
off and of course I just got more responses from the server saying no
response is necessary.

When I subscribed to the list I saw a list-owner address....

yes now that I gave it my email address and password I see that it's
ubuntu-users-owner at lists.ubuntu.com which apparently maps to
jeff.waugh at canonical.com, mako at canonical.com ... so I suspect
they are both aware of this annoyance by now...!
