Print Screen button not happening

I'm very new to Ubuntu but keen to learn. 
In Computer -> Desktop Preferences -> Keyboard Shortcuts I have the print button
set up (as per default) to take screenshots and Alt+Print for screenshots of the
current highlighted application.

When I press print and then open gimp and create a new image I can not paste the
screenshot in. Any ideas? Solutions?
