what's up...free games?

For free games, open up Synaptic, click Search, set "Look in:" to
Description and Name, and type in "game" in the search field. You may
want to enable Universe before doing this. I have Universe and
Multiverse enabled, and I got 579 packages as a result.

If you're thinking of the Cygwin-equivalent to Linux for Windows,
check out http://www.transgaming.com/
It's $5 US per month, with a minimum subscription of 3 months. It's
not perfect, but it lets me play WarCraft 3, where my (now defunct)
Windows partition would crash horribly when trying to play it.
Playing it under WineX (or Cedega as it's now called) wasn't as smooth
as in Windows, but at least it wouldn't hard lock my system. :)

To run some windows apps (that don't require DirectX), you can install
the wine and winesetuptk packages. This is of course free (in both
senses).

Also, if you want to run programs like MS Office, you can go to
http://www.codeweavers.com/ and buy a 6-month subscription for that.
I think it's 50 or 60 US dollars for it, but I'm not sure.

Did you mean VMWare? I don't think you can play DirectX games with it. :(
