Now I have a somewhat clearer picture of the problem if not the cure. My KDE's kscd player will run through my stereo perfectly, but I get no sound when I try to play Realplayer, xmms, Kaboodle, Gnome's cd player, etc. Therefore it isn't my sound card as the cd will play straight out.
