3Com EtherLink III ISA (3C509b-TP) network problem

Basically my Ubuntu box doesn't want to recognize its 3Com EtherLink
III (3) ISA (3C509b-TP) NIC. I looked around the internet for similar
problems, and it seems most people with this card have been able to
resolve their network connections by adding the module 3c509 and doing
some other things like disabling PnP for ISA.
Now since I'm a linux newbie I don't know many of my options. I tried
doing sudo modprobe 3c509 and that actually made the Link/ACT light on
my SMC router turn on, but not the Speed light, and the computer still
didn't detect any ethernet card. I tried setting up a network
connection in network settings after doing that, but that didn't do
much either. After I reboot the module 3c509 disappears from the
module list, and the Link light turns off on my router. I've tried
disabling "Plug and Play OS" in my bios as well, but that didn't help.
I've seen some drivers' sources for this card for linux, but I'm not
sure how to compile or execute them. I'm pretty sure the ISA bridge is
detected though since it shows up when I execute lspci.
SiS 530 super7 is the chipset and the motherboard model is PC Chips
M598, I think. The ethernet card works well in Windows. Anyone have
any suggestions on what I should do next?
Thanks,
Roman
