ext modem

Hi all, this may sound like a newbie question but here goes. After
setting up my Ubuntu box with broadband wireless I now need to configure
an external modem for use on the road. After restarting with the modem
plugged in to ttyS0 ubuntu does not recognize it being there.
Do I need to run MAKEDEV ttyS0 or is there an easier way? I came from
SuSE and yast could confgiure it for me.
