Font renderingn with anti-alias support

Hi!
I was of the firm impression that all fonts rendered in X nowadays
(atleast when using Gnome) went through the same engine which
basically means antialiased fonts are rendered correctly in all
applications.

I have however noticed that this might have been a somewhat naive
perspective. :)

So, why is it, that when I launch certain applications (such as LyX)
the fonds get rendered without anti-aliasing? :)
