It should be pointed out that the 'Promise RAID' controllers, lack the
'RAID' bit and are simply dual-channel IDE/ATA controllers...

There is however a flag, to say that disk X and Y should be treated as a
mirrored volume, but it's up to the Operating System to actually do it.

When a disk fails, having a perfect copy of your data is quite useful...

In a mirrored setup, you can boot off each device independently;  if you're
lucky, the BIOS (or boot-loader) will be able to try the first disk and if
that has failed, try the second.
