Our messages crossed -- my apologies -- I must have been half asleep
when I tried and/or maybe I accidentally tried it on this machine
which I think doesn't use sg even though it's scsi (it's an oldworld
Mac). It's a problem when you have too many things going on at once.

See my followup to the list for details.

BUT I'll ask again -- why did they remove the command-line utilities
like sane-find-scanner from the package on Ubuntu? Is there another
similar diagnostic utility ? For whatever reason I can't get xsane to
see the scanner, but I know from past experience with sane that it
will be a hair-puller and then suddenly I will discover the secret.
