uninstalling gnome-desktop?

Hi there, again.

Well I have this dude, when I tried to uninstall some programs
using synaptic, there appear in the list of dependences gnome desktop.
My question is, what is the gnome desktop?, is it like windowsXP the
main screen for working?, but most important yet, it is safe to
uninstall it?

This appears when trying to uninstall totem and xpdf, I've already
installed mplayer and acroread so I thought it was a good idea to
uninstall them.
