Broken CUPS

Most of what i've tried is in the gnome gui and synaptic. Ie I tried
to unapuse the printer (as it was paused a while back. the dialogue
just freezes. i thought oh, maybe its just the gui thats not wokring
properly, but if i try to configure cups from th econsole it keeps
'exiting with a child process.
I've tried this both as root and as a regualr user, both time this
just hasnt worked. So im seriously contemplating just going bak to
warty now.
