I downloaded and installed Warty's AMD kernel

No go.

Installed a Debian kernel from my local mirror.

All's fine.

This is the kernel that works:
summer at Glider:~ $ uname -a
Linux Glider 2.6.8-1-k7 #1 Thu Oct 7 02:47:47 EDT 2004 i686 GNU/Linux
