1. Though it has a lot more than fixing things, Knoppix is the best bet 
for being able to fix anything on an i386 architecture.  It has a 
partitioning tool, but I can't remember which one it is.

2. I have no clue.  However, when I got the latest one and saw the 
Ubuntu watermark as the default desktop, I was scratching my head a bit.
